China’s railway operator has initiated a groundbreaking pilot program allowing pets to accompany their owners on select high-speed trains along the Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed Railway. This move marks a significant departure from the previous regulations that prohibited pets on trains in the country.

The trial service, introduced by China Railway Express Co, offers passengers the opportunity to book a designated spot for their cats or dogs in specially designed pet transport containers onboard the same train. These containers are equipped with essential amenities such as air circulation, oxygen sensors, and noise reduction features to ensure the comfort and safety of the animals during the journey.

During the trial period, pets are housed separately in a designated logistics compartment, away from the passenger seating areas. The service is currently being tested on ten train services between five major stations, including Beijing South, Jinan West, Nanjing South, Shanghai Hongqiao, and Hangzhou East.

Passengers interested in availing themselves of this service can make reservations through the 12306 system at least two days in advance. Each pet must meet specific criteria, such as being a domesticated cat or dog in good health, weighing no more than 15 kilograms, and not taller than 40 centimeters at the shoulder.

Moreover, required documents include a valid ID and a certificate of animal quarantine to ensure compliance with health and safety standards. Pets are monitored in real time by trained railway staff, who conduct regular inspections and provide necessary care, including water supply, throughout the journey.
Passengers are encouraged to arrive at the station well in advance to complete the check-in procedures, ensuring a smooth boarding process for both the pets and their owners. The service also emphasizes a “same departure, same arrival” policy, enabling pets and their owners to travel together on the same train.

Pricing for the pet transport service is determined based on the travel distance, with a 30 percent discount offered during the trial phase. This discount makes the service more accessible and affordable for pet owners, encouraging greater participation and feedback on the overall experience.
Industry experts view this initiative as a significant step towards modernizing China’s transportation infrastructure and catering to the evolving needs of pet owners. The introduction of pet-friendly travel options aligns with global trends in pet care and reflects changing consumer preferences towards more inclusive and pet-friendly services.
While the program has garnered positive reactions from many pet owners, concerns about animal welfare and stress during the journey have also been raised. Suggestions for dedicated pet carriages where animals can stay with their owners have been proposed, highlighting the importance of addressing both the physical and emotional well-being of pets during transit.
Overall, the introduction of pet-friendly policies on high-speed trains represents a positive shift towards more inclusive and customer-centric services in the transportation sector. As the pilot program progresses and gathers feedback, further enhancements and adjustments can be expected to ensure a seamless and enjoyable travel experience for both pets and their owners.
