During winter, the cold weather can be harsh not just on our skin but also on our furry friends’ paws. Chloe Mackintosh, from Boxwood Avenue, created a DIY paw balm to protect our pets’ paw pads from the ice, snow, and salt on pavements. This balm, made with natural ingredients like shea butter, coconut oil, and beeswax, is a soothing solution to keep their paws healthy.
The paw balm comprises non-toxic and all-natural elements that are approved by the American Kennel Club and veterinarians. Shea butter and coconut oil provide moisture and hydration, while beeswax aids in healing chapped paws. Not only do these ingredients condition and moisturize, but they are also safe for pets with allergies or sensitivities, according to Dr. Ivana Crnec from Veterinarians.org. Dr. Crnec highlights that these ingredients can prevent irritation and expedite the healing process of cracked or injured paw pads, making this balm suitable for both dogs and cats.
Dr. Crnec suggests that the DIY paw balm can be applied daily and its frequency depends on the specific need. For maintenance purposes, applying the balm four to five times a week is recommended. In cases of acute issues like dry, cracked paws, it is safe to use the balm two to three times a day. The balm can be easily massaged onto the paw pads, and even if your pet licks it off, it is harmless.
This DIY balm can be stored for up to a year in a cool, dry place. The simple recipe involves combining shea butter, coconut oil, olive oil, and beeswax pellets in a large mason jar, melting the mixture in a pot of simmering water, and then transferring it into smaller jars to solidify.
Winter pet care is essential to ensure our furry companions remain healthy and comfortable during the colder months. Apart from paw balms, there are various other DIY projects and crafts that can enhance the well-being of your pets. Exploring pet care ideas and engaging in DIY activities can strengthen the bond between you and your beloved animals, making winter a cozy and delightful season for both you and your pets.
