A recent study conducted by KeraVet Bio Inc. in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, revealed that pet owners have a strong preference for using veterinary wound gel over traditional Elizabethan collars for post-procedure care. The study, which enrolled 20 patients, aimed to determine whether pet owners would choose KeraVet Gel or an Elizabethan cone for their pets’ healing process.
KeraVet Gel, the product under investigation, is specifically designed for canine and feline patients. It incorporates keratin as its primary ingredient along with a potent bitterant to discourage licking behavior. Previous clinical trials by KeraVet Bio have demonstrated the gel’s effectiveness in reducing wound edema and chronic inflammation compared to triple antibiotic ointment.
The founder and CEO of KeraVet Bio, Luke Burnett, emphasized that their gel product offers an evidence-based solution for wound care, enhancing healing outcomes and overall quality of life for both pets and their owners by eliminating the need for a cone.
The study, which has not yet been published, involved 20 patients from a general practice veterinary clinic. Half of the patients were assigned to receive an Elizabethan cone, while the other half received KeraVet Bio’s wound gel product. Notably, a significant majority of pet owners whose pets were initially assigned to the cone group opted to switch to the gel product.
Feedback from the study participants indicated that 86% of pet owners who used the wound gel reported positive results. One dog in the study, prevented from licking a granuloma by the gel, experienced accelerated healing in the affected area. Veterinarians involved in the study rated the gel product favorably, noting its effectiveness in providing an alternative to the traditional Elizabethan collar.
According to KeraVet Bio, the study’s findings align with customer feedback received since the launch of KeraVet Gel, reinforcing the product’s ability to replace the cone and improve the healing process for pets. The company’s commitment to innovation in pet wound care reflects a growing trend in the industry towards more effective and pet-friendly healing solutions.
As pet owners increasingly seek alternatives to uncomfortable and restrictive post-procedure care methods, the demand for innovative products like KeraVet Gel is on the rise.
