A new nonprofit organization, PAWSS (Protecting Animals While Supporting Sobriety), aims to assist individuals struggling with addiction by providing support to keep their pets during treatment and recovery from substance abuse. Liz Newman, President of PAWSS, highlighted the emotional dilemma faced by many individuals in recovery who are torn between seeking treatment and parting with their cherished pets.
During a recent Grass Valley City Council meeting, Liz Newman and Chief Dan Foss of the Nevada City Police Department shed light on the critical role that pets play in the lives of those battling addiction. PAWSS steps in to offer a lifeline by offering temporary foster care, veterinary aid, and reunification services to bridge the gap for these individuals.
For many struggling with addiction, their pets serve as a vital source of companionship and solace. PAWSS’ innovative approach includes providing temporary foster care, essential veterinary services like spaying, neutering, and general pet care, as well as ensuring ongoing communication between owners and pets during the treatment phase.
The program’s impact extends beyond emotional support; it significantly boosts treatment completion rates for drug and alcohol rehabilitation, as evidenced by a 38 percent increase when individuals are assured of their pets’ well-being. Studies reveal that 91 percent of people in recovery view their pets as a crucial pillar of support during their journey to sobriety.
According to Liz Newman, data from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) indicates that a notable percentage of shelter surrenders stem from owner crises like addiction treatment. The financial implications are also staggering, with the cost of sheltering a dog far exceeding the expenses associated with pet fostering, underscoring the economic benefits of programs like PAWSS.
PAWSS’ proactive approach aligns with the growing recognition of the significance of pets in aiding recovery efforts, not only locally but also on a national scale. Councilmember Jan Arbuckle highlighted the profound impact of pets on the homeless population’s willingness to seek help, emphasizing the deep bond between individuals and their animal companions.
PAWSS’ board members, including Vice-president Shaunna Leslie with a private sector background and Dr. Susan Murphy, a seasoned veterinarian, bring a wealth of expertise to the organization. The initiative aims to collaborate with various community partners such as local veterinary clinics, Sammies Friends, and behavioral health organizations to expand its reach and impact.
