The Plight of Guinea Pigs and Rabbits in USDA-Licensed Facilities

Imagine being a sick, newborn guinea pig, surrounded by overcrowded conditions, filth, and neglect. This was the reality for more than 1,200 guinea pigs at a single USDA-licensed facility in Pennsylvania. Lady Freethinker's investigation revealed a widespread pattern of cruelty and noncompliance with federal animal welfare regulations across 44 breeders in nine counties.

The Disturbing Conditions Uncovered

Inspectors found animals suffering from untreated illnesses, living in feces-saturated bedding, and lacking access to clean food and water. Some guinea pigs were even trampled to death by their cage mates. Shockingly, two breeders were resorting to blunt force trauma to kill animals, a clear violation of the Animal Welfare Act.

Lack of Accountability and Enforcement

Despite numerous violations and egregious conditions, only a small number of breeders faced any enforcement action from the USDA. In many cases, it was state law enforcement responding to animal cruelty tips that intervened on behalf of these suffering animals. More must be done to hold these facilities accountable and ensure the well-being of their inhabitants.
