A recent survey conducted by PetSmart Charities and Gallup revealed that many pet owners in the US struggle to afford necessary veterinary care for their beloved animals. The study found that financial constraints led more than half of pet owners to skip or decline veterinary services, despite considering their pets as family members.
The survey, which interviewed 2498 cat and dog owners, highlighted a concerning trend where households with lower incomes were most likely to forgo veterinary care due to affordability issues. Even higher-income earners faced challenges in accessing care, with a significant portion reporting financial constraints as a barrier to seeking treatment for their pets.
Among the pet owners surveyed, a substantial percentage admitted to not taking their pets to the veterinarian within the past year, leading to potential health risks and untreated conditions. The study also revealed disparities in care access, with certain demographics, such as young adults, Black and Hispanic pet owners, and those from lower-income households, facing higher barriers to veterinary services.
Concerningly, a significant number of pet owners reported negative outcomes from skipping veterinary care, including worsening health conditions and even pet fatalities. The inability to afford necessary treatments forced some owners to surrender their pets, highlighting the dire consequences of financial limitations on pet health.
Despite the clear need for more affordable care options, the survey indicated that many pet owners were not presented with cost-effective alternatives by veterinary professionals. Payment plans were identified as a potential solution to make treatments more accessible, with a majority of pet owners expressing interest in alternative care methods, such as community clinics, home visits, and telemedicine.
Experts in the field emphasized the importance of collaboration across the veterinary industry to address the access-to-care crisis.
