Geelong Seeks Public Input on Pet Ownership and Animal Wellbeing

Geelong residents are encouraged to participate in shaping the future of pet ownership and animal welfare by providing feedback for the upcoming Domestic Animal Management Plan (DAMP). This plan, revised every four years, serves as a framework for managing cats and dogs in the City of Greater Geelong, aiming to strike a balance between pet owners’ needs and those of the broader community.

The DAMP addresses various aspects of animal management, including open space requirements, pet identification, lost pet protocols, measures against dog attacks, and cat desexing initiatives. Notably, previous plans led to the establishment of dog parks in Lara and Drysdale. With nearly 38,000 registered cats and dogs in Greater Geelong, pets play a significant role in residents’ lives, enriching their quality of life and contributing to the community fabric.

Acknowledging the importance of harmonious coexistence between pets and the community, the City seeks input from all stakeholders, not just pet owners. Whether individuals have canine companions, feline friends, or other pets, their perspectives are valued in shaping policies that reflect collective attitudes towards domestic animals. The ultimate goal is to ensure safe shared spaces, promote responsible pet ownership, maintain pet health, and safeguard the environment.

Public engagement is vital to tailor the DAMP to meet evolving community needs effectively. The City’s Animal Management team, which addresses over 6,000 animal-related inquiries annually, relies on this feedback to enhance their services and support mechanisms. By fostering collaboration and understanding among residents, the plan strives to foster a cohesive environment where pets are cared for, and the community thrives.

To gather diverse insights, the City is conducting in-person consultations and distributing surveys at popular outdoor locations. These efforts aim to capture the perspectives of individuals who frequent public spaces, ensuring a representative and inclusive planning process. Residents are encouraged to participate in these consultations and provide feedback before the engagement period concludes on April 20, 2025.

City officials, led by Cr Chris Burson from the You Yangs Ward, are dedicated to creating a comprehensive and community-driven plan that upholds the welfare of pets, addresses environmental concerns, and fosters responsible pet ownership practices. By actively involving residents in decision-making processes, Geelong aims to set a benchmark for inclusive and effective animal management strategies.

For those interested in contributing to the discussion or learning more about the current DAMP, online feedback submissions are accepted at yoursay.geelongaustralia.com.au/DAMP2026 until the deadline. Together, Geelong residents can shape a brighter future for pet ownership and animal wellbeing in the region.
